gdeon: HRW's Next Search Cycle
To cut right to the chase, another Search Cycle is upon us soon, bringing much discussion to the Staff table. A suggestion has been brought forth to skip this cycle, that we might put such a large effort into a large plot arc rather than another Search. This is with the idea we would resume Search at our next cycle, beginning in October.
However, nothing is written in stone just yet. We'd really like to hear what all of you think about this. If you would like to comment, please click on "Post a new comment".
Hopefully, anonymous commenting will be allowed in the near future. Until then, a LiveJournal account is necessary. Alternatively, please feel free on Harper's Tale to '@send gid' with your comments, and I will be happy to post them for you. Just let me know whether you'd like the comment to be anonymous or if it should include your name. I will keep all comments confidential.
The deadline to comment on this post is Friday, January 20, 2006, at 5:00 p.m. MOOtime. At that time, HRW Staff will vote on the issue, and an announcement will be made a few days after that.
If you have any questions on this, please feel free to page a staff member, listed on Harper's Tale at the bottom of 'cwho/@cwho for High Reaches'.

Personally I was hoping for a Search cycle, because I was hoping to Stand, at 'Reaches, and soon. My char is already starting to be finicky and directionless in a way that irritates me -- I was hoping to Candidate her to help get her past that. Skipping a Search cycle is therefore kind of inconvenient for me. But like, I'm certainly not going to stand in the way if y'all have a plot in mind.

What kind of plot are we talking about here? And why skip Search because of it?

A weyr-wide plot arc, similar in scale and involvement to what happened during the Leader's Return TP and attendent spinoffs.
The reasons for skipping Search that I've heard floated:
1) The weyr is very idle, has been for a while, and the last Search didn't do anything to fix this. It's not fair to bring a group of candidates in just to leave them sitting there, better to take a cycle off, fix things, and go on from there.
2) The number of applications has been dropping like a rock, and there's been a real sense of having to scrape the barrel to get enough passable candidates on top of that. Taking a cycle off might concentrate the candidates more tightly.
3) If we run a weyr-wide plot arc to try and stir up activity again, the most creative brains will likely be caught between trying to play the plot and trying to run SearchCo. Also, there's a lack of people around, and running two things at once could be stressful, given most are in school or have jobs. Skipping might allow the focus to remain unmixed.
I was initially in favour of skipping, but if folks think we can pull off both, I'd be happy to let it be attempted.

I have noticed how applications/candidate groups have shrunk lately and sort of wondered if something could be done about it.
I think a plot can probably generate activity while it's running, but will people stick around after? For the next cycle? Maybe. Or maybe you'll just have the current HRW players play in the plot instead of drawing in new players (without a dragon).
Personally, I think trouble with the lessening interest in Search has more to do with HT's policy of one dragon per player, than anything else. At least when it comes to Search.
Skipping a cycle might generate a large clutch next time around, but I'm not sure it will do anything about the level of activity around the weyr/game.
What might be needed is more arcs/plots running continuously, rather than your random TP every once in a while.
Just my two cents.

pirate_benny: Next Cycle
I'd have to say that I'm not completely against the prospect of skipping the search. But then again I have no plans in standing or anything, so I don't see that perspective. Anyway, I feel like even myself have been idlish as of late and that hopefully a nice fun TP would stir up the cobwebs and hopefully get some popularity in the weyr so that by the point the next cycle comes around we can get some more candidate choices.
Thats my two cents and some more :P

I'm good with either. If you do Search, I'm interested in SCo, again, but if you do a TP, I'd be interested in that. Of course, this is if RL doesn't bash me into the ground unexpectedly. :)

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not active - But, I'm really going to try and fix that - A non-responsibilty character would be a good thing.
However, I'm not sure how much of an issue it will be on HT, but from my experiences elsewhere, I've noted that if for some reason there's no Search, the applicants don't really wait around, they just go somewhere else, where there is Search. And, if that happens, it won't really help out :/
TPs are best when coupled with other draws, to get new people in. Otherwise, people tend to be hesitant to step into a new plot, without anything else to define their interaction.
My (not really counting for much) vote would be to try and have 2 or 3 people organize the TP (not necessarily SearchCO types) and go on with the Search. If nothing else, it may allow the candidates to interact more fully, without the sense of isolation that tends to accompany a candidate class.

khay_khan: My thirtysecond mark
For the last RL year, I've been as idle (or more) as anyone, and it's something I'm working on fixing. I think TP's are a great draw, we should definitly do one.
I think the issue with search is a little more complex. Numbers of new players (actually new players, not just alts) has been down for a long time on almost all games, certainly on all the Pern games I play, they've been down. On HT there is a policy that only one character that a player plays can impress and be a rider at one time. I personally find this very limiting, but when we had a WHO that took up two full screens during 'off hours', it seemed fair. Now, ironicly at the end of the pass we're having trouble finding good players and good characters to impress to what at this point in cannon should be dwindling numbers of eggys.
I'd love to put Khan up for search, but that would mean giving up Kh'et and Telynth (my absoloute favourite pair of rider/dragon that I've ever had the chance to impress anywhere) and that would break my heart.
Possible solutions to this are:
1.) We totally nix the 1 player-1 rider rule and let people impress as they can where they can when they can. Yeah willy-nilly-chaos!
2.) We partially do away with the above rule in one of two ways, we either limit the number of metallics a certain player can impress, or we restrict it to 1 player-1 rider per weyr. And since we only have 2 weyrs, that makes that one right simple. We can even put them together, only two rider characters, only one of them can be metallic. Yeah minorly loosened restrictions!
Granted, as a weyr we can't make this change on our own, it has to be taken up with the Wizzen, which is a process that can take a while and create alot of friction. What I propose shouldn't be undertaken lightly. Perhaps if the leadership of Ista has a similar feeling, then the Wizzen will be more willing to listen to the problem, its reasons and its possible solutions.
As to skipping search all together, it won't help us retain more than a couple people, who just really want to impress at HRW. Less people to search means better chance that you'll impress somewhere, and if you don't have a search at HRW, there's always Ista in a few months. If you don't impress there, you can always try HRW then, this is the thinking.
I don't think that skipping search will help. I think doing a search and a TP will help to some extent, it might give those of us who are semi-idle the impetus to log on and RP a little more frequently. But with overall dwindling numbers, I think we'll be facing the same issue in October unless somethings done about the restriction of 1 player-1 rider. It's not even a big solution, but it might help.
Kh'et & Khanyl's player......

I (K'nex) am way more interested in a weyr-wide TP/plot than in search, personally. I doubt, regardless of whether it is decided to have a Search cycle or not, that I'll be a part of Search Co. It seems to me that the pool of applicants is just horribly small these days, and more often they just get a dragon and idle out anyway - which is no fun for anyone, particularly those that worked on their insp.
HT isn't as active as it has been in the past, HRW isn't either, but I'm pretty sure there are people still around who'd be /willing/ to play with a nudge. I'd rather devote my time to RPing with people, old and new, in plotting and TPness, than working search.
So, my vote to skip search is largely personal, no doubt. But it's also founded in the opinion of a lack of people worth searching and impressing that would apply, as well as a feeling there is a small amount of HRW-folk who'd want to run Search.
